İsmet Kür (born İsmet Zorluhankızı , September 29, 1916, Göztepe, Kadıköy , in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire ; died January 21, 2013 in Istanbul , Turkey ) was a Turkish educator, journalist and writer of mainly children's and youth literature .

Life

İsmet Kür was born on September 29, 1916 in Göztepe, Kadıköy , in Istanbul , Ottoman Empire, into an intellectual family. Her father Mehmed Selim was a journalist, writer and politician and her mother Ayşe Nazlı was an intellectual woman. Her sister Halide Nusret Zorlutuna (1901–1984) was also a writer and poet. When in 1934 the surname law was enacted, she took the surname "Zorluhankızı" to (dt .: daughter of Zorluhan), as its name "Ismet" is mainly used for men and has repeatedly met with confusion. Your paternal family tree can be traced back six or seven generations. One of her ancestors was a Bey , a leader from Zorluhan in Erzurum , eastern Turkey.

education

After finishing the girls-teacher-school in Edirne , İsmet studied in the literature department of Gazi İlk Muallim Mektebi (educational institution for teacher training, Turkish Gazi Eğitim Enstitüsü ) in Ankara and acquired a teaching qualification in 1938.

family

She married a mathematician who was passionate about classical music and painting. In the course of this marriage she took the surname "Kür". She gave birth to two daughters, the journalist and writer Pınar Kür (born 1943) and the sculptor Işılar Kür . Her grandson Emrah Kolukısa was born in 1972. He works as a producer for NTV (Turkey) and now has a son, Cem .

After receiving a scholarship, Kür went to London with her two young daughters to learn English. In 1953 she attended the Kent School of Drama . From 1956 to 1960 she lived in New York . There she attended courses at New York University in 1960 on children's and youth psychology , adult education , human relations , history of education and Russian literature of the 19th century .

In America she founded the “Women's Association” together with the wife of the Turkish ambassador.

She said in an interview that she attributed her old age to exercise: tennis, volleyball, skiing, gymnastics and morning exercises. In September 2012, she suffered a stroke and became bedridden. She died at home on January 21, 2013 at the age of 96 and was buried in Ayazağa Cemetery after a funeral service in Teşvikiye Mosque on January 23.

Career

Educator and diplomat

Freestyle served as a Turkish and literature teacher for 21 years. In the 1950s she worked at BBC World Service in London. In 1956 she was appointed Deputy Student inspector for the United States Territory and soon thereafter promoted to Student Inspector in New York City . She also served as a Turkish cultural attachée until 1960.

Journalist

For a long time she also worked as a journalist for Cumhuriyet and as a columnist for the magazines Barış and Yeni İstanbul .

Writer

Kür was friends with numerous writers, especially Kemal Tahir (1910–1973). She herself published 27 books in various genres such as research, essay, short story, poetry, novel and memoir. She also wrote skits for radio and stage works . She published her first poem in the magazine Çocuk Dünyası (Children's World) in 1927 and her first short story Mutlu Tahayüller in the magazine Muhit in August 1931.

Freestyle wrote more than 100 skits for "Çocuk Saati" (children's hour) for Ankara Radio , as well as children's programs for the radio stations Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT) in Turkey and Bayrak Radyo Televizyon Kurumu (Bayrak) in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus .

She published her memoir Yarısı Roman in 1995 and 2008, the follow-up volume Yıllara mı Çarptı Hızımız . Osmanlıca Çocuk Dergileri is a research project on children's magazines in the Ottoman language . She wrote until her death.

Freestyle was a member of the "People of the Letters Association" and the Türkiye Yazarlar Sendikası (TYS - Association of Turkish Writers).
