Zurich Bog is a 490 acres (2 km²) rain bog in Arcadia , New York . The bog has been the focus of science since the 19th century and was declared a National Natural Landmark in May 1973 . The area was donated on December 10, 1957 by Lyman Stuart and the Newark School District to the Bergen Swamp Preservation Society , which had been founded in 1935 to preserve the similar Bergen-Byron Swamp .

geography

The moor is a large wetland between north-south trending drumlins south of Lake Ontario . There is another small drumlin in the middle of the wetland. At the northern end of the area is the lake Mud Pond , which is usually covered by a mat of floating turf and which you could even cross on foot, but at risk of death. The lake is up to 100 ft (30.5 m) deep.
