The Philadelphia Zoo in the Centennial District of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , on the west bank of the Schuylkill River , was the first true zoo in the United States . It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania on March 21, 1859, its opening was delayed by the American Civil War until July 1, 1874. The zoo opened with 1,000 animals and an entry price of 25 cents. For a short time, the zoo also housed animals that were caught on safaris and cared for for the Smithsonian Institution before they endedNational Zoo had built.

The Philadelphia Zoo is one of the most successful zoos in the world in breeding animals that are difficult to breed in captivity . It is consistently rated as one of the best zoological facilities in the United States, along with the San Diego Zoo and ZooTampa at Lowry Park . The zoo also works with numerous conservation organizations around the world to preserve the natural habitats of the animals shown in the zoo.

The zoo covers an area of 42 acres (17 hectares) and is home to nearly 1,300 animals. It also has a petting zoo , a paddle boat lake, a carousel, a tethered balloon and many interactive and educational exhibitions.

history

Victorian entrance by Frank Furness .

When the Philadelphia Zoological Garden first opened its Victorian gates on July 1, 1874, it attracted 3,000 visitors because it was the only zoo in the New World . The zoo began with various exhibition cages and 200 mammals , including buffalo , deer , wolves , foxes , bears , and monkeys , as well as 67 species of birds and 15 reptiles . The reptiles and small mammals were housed in The Solitude Mansion (The Solitude), a country house that John Penn had built in 1785. A carriage house ( Remise ) was built at the entrance area for the horses of the zoo visitors. The landscaping and architecture mimicked the atmosphere of the Victorian Garden , which is still noticeable in the zoo today.

The 1876 Centennial Exposition was set up in Fairmount Park , just blocks from the 33 acre zoo. The President Ulysses S. Grant paid his respects to the exhibition and then visited the zoo on April 23. As a result, the number of visitors rose to almost 680,000 in 1876, a record that was only set in 1951 with almost 858,000 visitors.

The Penrose Research Laboratory was established in 1901. The very first research institute for animal diseases in a zoo did a lot to fight the diseases of the zoo animals, to increase their vitality and longevity. In 1901 the laboratory started autopsies (necropsy) on every animal that was sick and died. The history of the laboratory founded preventive medicine and allows conclusions to be drawn about the foresight of Dr. Charles B. Penrose and Dr. Cortland Y. White , professors at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School , too.

The zoo welcomed visitors arriving by rail at the Zoological Garden station on 34th Street and Girard Avenue from the station's opening in 1874 until it closed in 1902. Since 2013, the zoo's officials have been working to restore the station and will be reopened to further increase visitor numbers and reduce parking space shortages on the busiest days.

Philadelphia Zoo has developed a successful breeding program and has numerous "firsts" - first offspring - for example the first offspring of an orangutan and a chimpanzee in a US zoo in 1928, the first cheetah in a zoo in 1956, the first successful birth an ant Hedgehog (Echidna) in North America in 1983, and the first successful breeding of a giant otter in North America of 2004.

Philadelphia Zoo also pioneered the first flamingo breeding program under the direction of retired curator John A. Griswold . Using innovative feeding techniques, the zoo was the first to preserve the pink and red pigmentation of these birds; In addition, the zoo was the first to successfully breed chile flamingos and greater flamingos in captivity.

A Guam kingfisher , 2011.

The first recorded breeding of the Guam kingfisher from parent animals took place in 1985. The breeding program was started because the brown night tree snake was introduced in Guam in the 1940s . The species reproduced rapidly , bringing several endemic bird species on the island to the verge of extinction. In 1983, the Guam Bird Rescue Project was started under the leadership of the Philadelphia Zoo to save the local subspecies of the cinnamon rye and the guamralle , two native species that were still abundant in numbers. The rescue plan was to capture all of Guam's kingfishers and rallen, along with developing a captive breeding program. Breeding has been moved to US zoos until reintroduction appears possible.

On December 24, 1995, a fire in the World of Primates building killed 23 animals, including a family of six western lowland gorillas , a family with three orangutans, four white-handed gibbons , and ten lemurs (two varis , six ring-tailed lemurs and two mongozmakis ) . All were from endangered species. The animals died of carbon monoxide poisoning in their sleep ; none was burned. Ten primates survived in an attached building called the Discovery House . Until then there were only a small part of the zoo buildings with fire alarms, the primate building, which was built in 1985, was not part of the monitored part. In the ten months after the fire, the zoo installed fire alarms in all buildings.

Portrait of a puma , 2007.

On July 1, 1999, the zoo opened a new 2.5 acre monkey enclosure with indoor and outdoor enclosures containing ten species of primates : Sumatran orangutans , western lowland gorillas, lemurs, lean monkeys and gibbons . In 2006 the zoo opened a new big cat enclosure with lions , Siberian tigers , Amur leopards , snow leopards , pumas and jaguars in enclosures that were modeled on the natural habitats. On May 30, 2009, the zoo opened a new aviary with two species of birds that are extinct in the wild: Guamralle and Guam Kingfisher. In July 2009 the last two African elephants were given to a sanctuary.

In 2010 the exhibition Creatures of Habitat opened , at which endangered animals were represented by more than 30 life-size Lego statues at ten stations spread across the zoo grounds . The statues were designed by Lego artist Sean Kenney .

A new circular route system was introduced in 2011 with the Treetop Trail . The Zoo360 Animal Exploration Trail System is a network of mesh fence lanes with vistas that consist of elevated crests and paths on level ground for animals to wander through the zoo grounds. Other loop trails include the Great Ape Trail , Big Cat Crossing , Gorilla Treeway, and Meerkat Maze .

On April 13, 2013, the zoo opened the KidZooU ( Hamilton Family Children's Zoo and Faris Family Education Center ) in place of the old Pachyderm House (pachyderm house). The project replaces the old Children's Zoo , which had existed for around 50 years. In the KidZooU numerous offers for the formation of ecological awareness are presented, including rain gardens and cisterns, geothermal water heating and green roofs. It is the first exhibition to be certified by Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).

On December 29, 2016, Zenda , the oldest African lion, was euthanized in an American zoo at the age of 25. On February 20, 2018, Coldilocks , a 37-year-old polar bear, was euthanized. He, too, was well past the average age of 23 in wild bears. In 2019, the WildWorks Zoo opened , a climbing path 10 m high with bridges, cable cars and other obstacles. There are different levels of difficulty.

Attractions

There are special “behind-the-scenes” tours for visitors, as well as overnight stays for scout groups , families and youth groups. A series of concerts in the summer and other seasonal events such as Boo at the Zoo ( Halloween ), the Summer Ale Festival , and the Global Conservation Gala are part of the zoo's public relations work.
