Frank Heyling Furness (born November 12, 1839 in Philadelphia ; † June 27, 1912 ibid.) Was an American architect of historicism who was mainly active in Philadelphia and the surrounding area.

Frank Furness was born the son of the Unitarian preacher William Henry Furness in Philadelphia in the US state of Pennsylvania . Furness began as a student of John Fraser and an associate of Richard Morris Hunt . After his military service in the American Civil War , he initially formed an office partnership with Fraser and George Hewitt . During his subsequent independent activity as an architect, he built numerous banks, churches, synagogues and cultural institutions, a large part of which was demolished in the 20th century. A significant part of his work represented his approximately 200 buildings for American railroad companies, namely for the Reading Company , the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad . The Broad Street Station in Philadelphia, which he expanded from 1892-93 but was demolished in 1953, was valid for When it opened as the world's largest passenger station. His most important surviving buildings include the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (1871–76), the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia (1885) and the Fisher Fine Arts Library of the University of Pennsylvania (1891). His idiosyncratic style is characterized by the visible use of the building materials brick, stone and wood, with which he exerted a decisive influence on Louis Sullivan , who was employed in his office in 1873, and Frank Lloyd Wright .
