The Satyr Tragopan ( Tragopan satyra ) is a species of bird in the family of pheasant-like (Phasianidae).
description
Males and females differ significantly in size and plumage color. The rooster is beautifully colored and reaches a length of 67 to 72 cm. He has a black head and a blue throat. The underside and the goiter are red with small white spots. The brown-beige spotted female reaches a length of around 58 cm. The males weigh between 1.5 and 2 kg. The females between 1 and 1.5 kg.
distribution
The species occurs in rain-rich forests at altitudes between 1800 and 3900 m in India, Nepal , Sikkim, Bhutan , southern China and Tibet .
Way of life
The satyrtragopan feeds mainly on vegetable matter. It eats grass, leaves , berries and insects .
The breeding season is in May and June. The animals build their nests on the ground or in trees. The females lay 4 to 8 eggs . The duration of the breeding season is 28 days.
Danger
The Satyrtragopan is listed on the IUCN Red List (IUCN classification NT).
