The Bergen-Byron Swamp (Eng. Bergen-Byron Swamp) is a 2000 acres (809 ha) swamp nature reserve and nature reserve is located in the area of ​​the cities of Byron and Bergen , New York .

geography

The swamp lies in the plain south of Lake Ontario at about 175  m above sea level . Spring Creek , Bigelow Creek and Robins Brook form tributaries of the Black Creek , which drains to the east and discharges its water to Lake Ontario via the Genesee River . Only small hills rise above the swamp, including Torpy Hill and Harris Hill , which rise only about 25 m from the plain. They form elongated hills and each stretch from northeast to southwest.

history

The swamp is more than 10,000 years old. The Bergen Swamp Preservation Society was founded in 1935 to preserve this valuable ecological area. In 1964, the swamp was named the first National Natural Landmark .

Flora and fauna

The swamp is home to a large number of rare animals and plants, the main tree species in the area are beech and white ash and there are also a large number of swamp plants: black huckleberry ( Gaylussacia baccata ), cardinal lobelia (Cardinal flower, Lobelia cardinalis), cinnamon fern (Cinnamon Fern, Osmundastrum cinnamomeum), tooth lilies (dog-tooth violets), polygala paucifolia (gay wings, cruciferous flowers), honeysuckle (honeysuckle, Lonicera), Arisaema triphyllum (jack-in-the-pulpit, arum), marsh marigold (marsh marigold, Caltha palustris), silk plants (milkweeds, asclepias), red pitcher plant (Purple pitcher plant, Sarracenia purpurea).
