Kurd Adler
Kurd Adler (* 1892 , † 6. July 1916 ) was a poet of German Expressionism , the poems about the First World War, written from the perspective of the soldier.
life and work
Little is known about Kurd Adler's life. He fought as a soldier in World War I and described in his poems the world of the trenches and the brief moments of happiness that soldiers experienced when they were on vacation at the front. The poems were written by Franz Pfemfert in his anthology Die Aktion-Lyrik. Published 1914-1916 ; they had appeared in Pfemfert's magazine “ Die Aktion ” from 1915 (including Das Geschütz , rest at the front and viewing ). In 1918 a collection of the poems was published.
Kurd Adler was killed on July 6, 1916 in combat operations on the Western Front . Erwin Piscator's obituary for Adler appeared as a poem in Pfemfert's magazine “Die Aktion” ( Kurd Adler killed! ); however, Piscator had not known Adler personally.
Poem example
- Consider
- We stand in wait on a high mountain
- and see Germany on the left and France on the right;
- and there is great quiet land everywhere
- with soft forests and blinkered villages.
- We are buried deep like animals
- to recover the booty. The guns
- blue-black mouths stare dully and bull.
- All things appear to be so ignorant
- that only the round, dull sound from over there
- Makes us think bitterly that we are destroyers.
- A feeling rises high
- of that love for the silent song
- Sunday morning and Sebastian Bach.
- An instant! And everything is gray.
- Five men run wild around a gun
- I think with a smile of enthusiasm
- the morning papers that we no longer read.
