Life

Andrée Clair grew up in a Paris suburb. Her father was an inspector in the postal, telegraph and telephone administration. After attending school, she studied at the Institute for Ethnology at the Sorbonne . She specialized in sub-Saharan Africa and graduated with a License ès lettres . Clair worked as a critic of children's books and books about sub-Saharan Africa as well as an editor at the Présence Africaine publishing house . She worked in the Sub-Saharan Africa department of the Musée de l'Homme in Paris , then as an ethnological assistant at the Institute for Central African Studies in Brazzaville , followed by a position as a professor in Chad . She visited nine countries in West and Equatorial Africa , where she often found work as a teacher.

Clair wrote numerous books for children and young people, most of which are set in Africa. She has also published poems and non-fiction books on Africa. She had a special relationship with Niger . Boubou Hama , the longtime President of the National Assembly of Niger , was the co-author of several of her books. From 1961 to 1974 she was a functionary at the Nigerien presidential office of President Hamani Diori , most recently as a cultural advisor. Clair participated in conferences on Niger and Black Africa as well as on children's and youth literature and published articles on these topics in several journals. When Hamani Diori was overthrown in a military coup in 1974, she had to give up her post as cultural advisor. Clair returned to France, where she initially lived in Paris and then retired in Dreux .
