Ueda Bin (1912)

Ueda Bin ( Japanese 上 田 敏 ; born October 30, 1874 in Tokyo ; † July 9, 1916 ibid), actually Ueda Yanagimura ( 上 田 柳 村 ), was a Japanese poet, critic, translator and enlightener. He was a co-editor of the Bungakukai magazine and he translated well-known works of French and English literature, especially the French symbolists , into Japanese in rhyme form.

Life

He was born as the eldest son of the vassal Ueda Keiji ( 上 田 絅 二 ) in Tokyo in 1874. After completing his literary studies at the Imperial University of Tokyo, he was a professor first at the Higher Normal School Tokyo (later Tokyo University of Education ) and then at his alma mater together with Natsume Sōseki as the successor of Koizumi Yakumo .

Due to his creative linguistic talent, he achieved a high reputation. Koizumi Yakumo praised his ability to express himself in English as a talent only "one in ten thousand" students had. He was familiar with numerous foreign languages ​​and had an in-depth knowledge of classical Japanese literature. In 1908 he traveled to Europe (Paris) to study; after returning to Japan he was a professor at the University of Kyoto . Two years later he took a position as a consultant to the literary faculty at Keiō University .

He died suddenly in 1916, at the age of 41, of kidney disease in his Tokyo apartment.

The most important work is the Kaichō on ( 海潮音 , sea ​​noises also sound of the tides ), a collection of German, English, French and Italian poems, which he himself translated into Japanese.
