Kaichō on ( Japanese 海潮音 , "sea noises" also "sound of the tides") is a Japanese poem anthology of European poetry by the writer Ueda Bin , which was first published in October 1905. It contains the translations of 57 poems by 29 different German, English, French and Italian poets and has been reprinted up to the present day and is very popular.

Ueda published the poem anthology at the age of 37 when he was a lecturer at the University of Tokyo . He translated the Italian poems and the poems in the Provençal language from English. As early as 1895, Ueda studied European poetry and European poetry circles as a student. He wrote about it in the magazine Teikoku Bungaku ( 帝国 文学 ). He advised the Japanese writers to pay particular attention to the poetry of the Victorian era . He also criticized the new style poetry ( 新 体 詩 , Shintaishi) that appeared shortly before the turn of the century (1899 ).

Individual poems of the anthology appeared in advance, from December 1902 to September 1905, in various magazines, such as the Myōjō ( 明星 ), Mannensei ( 万年青 ) and the Shirayuri ( 白 百合 ). While these were mainly older poems, in 1905, shortly before the first edition of the anthology, Ueda began to concentrate on the French group of poets Parnassia and the Symbolists . He then took six poems by the Parnassians and 22 poems by the Symbolists in the Kaichō on .

In particular, the poems of the Symbolists had an influence on the Japanese Symbolists: Kambara Ariake , Kitahara Hakushū and Miki Rofū .
