Théodore Aubanel

Théodore Aubanel (born March 26, 1829 in Avignon , † November 2, 1886 in Avignon) was a French poet and playwright of the Provencal language. He was a founding member of the Félibrige .

life and work

Aubanel came from a traditional printer family in Avignon. As a poet in the Provencal language, he belonged to the circle around Joseph Roumanille and Frédéric Mistral , who constituted himself as Félibrige on May 21, 1854 .

Because of the sensuality of his love poems, Aubanel came into conflict for the first time in 1860 with the conservative Catholic milieu of his family close to the church (in the former papal Avignon), held back for decades as a "bound poet" and died - after a new publication (1885) and renewed conviction through the church districts - at the age of 57 from a stroke.

Aubanel is (after Mistral) the greatest poet of the New Provencal language. His drama Lou Pan dóu Pecat (The Bread of Sin) from 1882 is also important.
