KK Chūōkōron Shinsha ( Japanese 株式会社 中央 公論 新社 , Kabushiki-gaisha Chūōkōron Shinsha ) is a Japanese publisher that was founded in 1886 under the name Chūōkōron-sha . The publisher has been part of the Yomiuri Shimbun group since 1999 , which is why the prefix shin ( , “new”) was added to the publisher's name. In Japan, the abbreviation Chūkō ( 中 公 ) and the short name Yomikō ( 読 公 ) are also used.

Company history

The publishing house was founded in 1886 by the Hansei-kai ( 反省 会 ), a group of like-minded people from the Nishi Hongan-ji Temple , in Kyoto . From the following year, the magazine Hanseikai Zasshi ( 反省 会 雑 誌 ) appeared, which was later renamed Chūōkōron ( 中央 公論 ). In 1896 the publishing house relocated to Tōkyō. In 1914, the company was renamed Chūōkōron-sha and listed on the stock exchange in 1926.

The publishing house expanded through a new form of newspaper, the Sōgō Zasshi ( 総 合 雑 誌 , "Generalanzeiger"), which reported critically on various topics (politics, economy, society, culture) in one issue. In 1916 the literary magazine Fujinkōron ( 婦人 公論 ) joined the portfolio.

In 1990 the publishing house was saved from bankruptcy by the Yomiuri Shimbun during the economic crisis and in 1999 it was completely taken over. In 2002, Yomiuri Shimbun was transformed into a holding company, Yomiuri Shimbun Gurūpu Honsha ( 読 売 新聞 グ ル ー プ 本社 ), in which it still exists today.

The original publisher Chūōkōron-sha was renamed KK Heisei Shuppan ( 株式会社 平 成 出版 ) in 1999 and liquidated in 2002.
