Kitahara Hakushū ( Japanese 北 原 白 秋 , actually: Kitahara Ryūkichi ( 北 原 隆吉 ); born January 25, 1885 in Yanagawa ; † November 22, 1942 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese poet, especially children's poetry .

Life

Kitahara published poems in magazines as a teenager and won a competition from Waseda Gakuhō magazine ( 早 稲 田 学報 ) with the poem Zento Kakusei no Fu ( 全都 覚 醒 賦 ). From 1904 he attended Waseda University for a short time , where he a. a. Wakayama Bokusui met. He joined the writers' groups Shinshisha ( 新 詩社 ; 1906) and Pan no Kai ( パ ン の 会 ; 1908) and in 1909 published his first volume of poetry Jashūmon . The Tanka collection Kiri no Hana was published in 1913 .

In 1918 Suzuki Miekichi appointed him to his magazine Akai Tori ( 赤 い 鳥 ). Here he had the task of sifting through submitted poems and collecting nursery rhymes and songs. Several volumes of poetry and the collection of essays Midori no Shokkaku emerged from the work . In 1976 Nihon Denshō Dōyō Shūsei ( 日本 伝 承 童 謡 集成 , "Traditional Japanese Nursery Rhymes ") appeared in six volumes.

Kitahara founded the Tanka magazine Tama in 1935 and became one of the leading exponents of Japanese symbolism . Among the writers he encouraged were Kimata Osamu and Miya Shūji .
