The Astental or the Asten is a valley in Carinthia and is one of the eastern side valleys of the upper Mölltal in the Goldberg Group . At the bottom of the valley, the Astenbach , a left tributary of the Möll , flows through the district of Asten in the municipality of Mörtschach . The nature trail “Astner Moos” leads through an eighty meter wide and one kilometer long fen.

It is framed by several peaks of this mountain group: Mohar ( 2604  m ), Stellkopf ( 2851  m ), Rote Wand ( 2855  m ), Makernigspitze ( 2644  m ) and Sadnig ( 2745  m ) & # 151; the latter at the transition to Fragant .

Administratively, the Astental belongs to the Mörtschach national park community and is the highest mountain village in Carinthia . The mountain farmers' farms are around 1,600 m above sea level.

history

In the 12th century the mining of gold revived in the area around Großkirchheim . Miners and adventurers from different countries sought their luck in the rough and inaccessible area of the Asten tunnels at altitudes of 2,000 to 2,800  m .

The miners extracted pebbles , gold and silver and delivered them over the Göritzertörl ( 2458  m ) for smelting to Döllach . This mountain path is still called the “Waschgang” (“Arzweg” in the vernacular) today.

At that time, the almost flat areas of the Astener Alm were a fertile area in which oats, wheat, rye and small apple and pear trees grew.

During the Little Ice Age , the glaciers expanded around 1600. The summers became shorter and cooler and the grain no longer ripened. It was no longer possible for the Asten residents to survive on their soil. They cleared and settled on the sunny, steep "Leitn" of the Vorderen Asten, where the farms and fields are today.

tourism

The Astental offers excellent hiking opportunities for young and old, right through managed alpine pastures and through a unique flora and fauna. The nature trail “Astner Moos” leads through an eighty meter wide and one kilometer long fen, where you can discover plants that are rare in Austria ( blue willow , Tauern flowers ).
