José-Maria de Heredia , originally José María de Heredia y Girard (born November 22, 1842 in Santiago de Cuba , Cuba , † October 2, 1905 in Bourdonné , Yvelines department ) was a French writer of Cuban origin.

Heredia was the son of Domingo de Heredia, who came from a long-established Spanish family in Cuba and his second wife, Louise F. Girard, a French woman from Saint-Domingue. At the age of 17, Heredia came to Paris in 1859 and began studying at the École nationale des chartes . From 1901 he worked as a librarian at the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal .

Heredia married Louise Despaigne in 1867 and had three daughters with her: Hélène, who later became the wife of the entomologist Maurice Maidron (1857-1911) and the literary historian René Doumic . The second daughter, Marie, who published as a writer under the pseudonym Gérard d'Houville and became the wife of the symbolist Henri de Régnier , and the third, Louise, who later became the wife of the writer Pierre Louÿs .

Heredia was naturalized in 1893 and was granted French citizenship. With effect from February 22, 1894, the Académie française Heredia took on as a member of Fauteuil 4 ("Seat No. 4"). He thus became the successor to Charles de Mazade . In 1906, a year after Heredia's death, the novelist Maurice Barrès succeeded him.

Heredia came into contact with the Parnassians through his friends Théodore de Banville and Charles Leconte de Lisle . At the latest with the appearance of his praised by literary criticism, with u. a. 118 sonnets , the collection of poems Les trophées , which encompasses almost all of his work , was one of them. Around 1900 his salon was considered one of the most important meeting places for Parisian literature.

Henri de Régnier, Heredia's son-in-law, saw the work Les trophées as the most important link between the Parnassians and the Symbolists . Heredia was considered an unsurpassed master of the sonnet due to his security in style and subject .
