Blas de Otero

Blas de Otero (born March 15, 1916 in Bilbao , † June 29, 1979 in Madrid ) was a Spanish poet .

Otero received training at a Jesuit school in his youth and studied law in Valladolid and philosophy and literature in Madrid. After the Spanish Civil War he worked as a lawyer for a short time. After a trip to Paris , he joined the Communist Party in 1951. In the next few years he lived in France and Cuba for a long time .

In 1942 Otero made his debut with the religiously influenced collection of poems Cántico espiritual , with which he referred to the work of the same name by Juan de la Cruz . After dealing with metaphysical questions in the three volumes of poetry Ángel fieramente humano , Redoble de conciencia and Ancia , Otero became the most important representative of Spanish poesía social with Pido la paz y la palabra , En Castellano and Que trata de España .
