Burton R. Pollin

Burton Ralph Pollin (born May 8, 1916 in Worcester, MA , † June 30, 2009 in Bronxville, NY ) was an American literary scholar and expert on the life and work of the American writer Edgar Allan Poe .

Life

Pollin graduated from City College of New York and received his PhD from Columbia University . Until his retirement he was a long-time lecturer in English at the City University of New York .

Pollin, who was considered a Poe expert, published twelve books on Poe and his work. Since 1985 he has been an honorary member of the Poe Studies Association .

Burton R. Pollin was married for over 65 years to Alice M. Pollin (March 4, 1918 - October 27, 2010), a professor of Spanish at New York University . The couple had two children.

In addition, Pollin published more than 160 articles on Poe.

Pollin also worked for many years in the editorial offices of the journals Poe Studies and The Edgar Allan Poe Review and made donations to various institutions dealing with Edgar Allan Poe. So gave it to the New York Public Library , the Penn State Rare Book Room and the University of Iowa always books with Poe reference. Including, for example, several hundred illustrated editions in different languages for the Special Collections Library of the University of Iowa in 2003 .
