Karl Neumann (born June 30, 1916 in Eilenburg , Delitzsch district , Province of Saxony , † April 9, 1985 in Radewege , Brandenburg-Land district ) was a German writer for children and young people.

Life

Karl Neumann jun. was born as the son of the tailor Karl Neumann and Marie Elsa. Burn born. After his school days in his then Prussian hometown of Eilenburg, he learned the painting trade there and then worked in his profession. Drafted into the military in 1939, at the end of the Second World War , during which he had married in 1943, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets , from which he was released in 1946. Due to his serious injuries - he lost a leg - he was no longer able to practice the profession he had learned.

For this reason, he tried other professions and ultimately completed a course in Erfurt to become a specialist teacher for art education . Then he worked as a teacher in Dessau-Süd . From 1958 Karl Neumann worked as a boarding school director and teacher for art education in the Brandenburg-Land district, including in Ziesar and Radewege . There he began to write his first books for children and young people. Due to their success, he settled in 1972 as a freelance writer in Brielow near Brandenburg an der Havel .

Artistic creation

With his books he was one of the most important authors of books for children and young people in the GDR , and many of his works were translated mainly in Eastern Europe. He doesn’t mention the instructing teacher in any of his books, but lets the story speak for itself through attention to detail, clarity and balanced composition. His first work Frank appeared in numerous editions with a total of more than twenty editions up to 2005 and was also performed as a play. The location of the action is his hometown Eilenburg and the surrounding area, the city being called Eulenberg in the novels. The sequel Frank and Irene has also reached eleven editions to date. The success drew Frank remains captain as the third volume . In the book The girl was called Gesine ... , which had 15 editions and was also made into a film, he reckons with the fascist ideology . He is also one of the first authors in the GDR who - with his work Ulrike - thematizes sexuality between young people.

Honors

In 1958 Neumann received an award from the Ministry of Culture for his first work, Frank . In 1969 he received the Alex Wedding Prize from the Berlin Academy of the Arts . The city of Eilenburg honors their son with a plaque at the location of the house where he was no longer born. The school for the mentally handicapped in Eilenburg has also been named after him since 2007.
