The action begins at the end of the protagonists' ninth school year, which began at the end of the second part . In the meantime, Frank's father, Simon Brinkmann, the foreman, and Irene's mother, Luise Sander , the consumer sales point manager, have married. Now Irene lives with her mother in the Brinkmanns' house.

With the start of the holidays, Frank's friends rediscovered boat building; they decide to convert their canoe into a sailing boat. While she was still planning, the news reached her that her canoe had been destroyed. It was stored in a shed in the paddock for the horses of the Pohl haulage company, which belongs to Pepo's father, and was trampled on by the horses during a thunderstorm night.

Nevertheless, they do not want to give up the dream of their own sailing boat. They ride their bikes to a large lake near the town of Torgenau, where there are numerous sailing boats. They lie in wait and wait for the last visitors to be able to cast off with one of the boats under cover of darkness. They sail across the lake all night. When dawn fell, they wanted to dock, but were caught by the owners. Frank, the only one unable to escape, describes the incident to the police. Fearing that the parents might find out something, the friends decide to offer the sailing club their work. They are supposed to tar the roofs of the sheds on the club's premises and do this job reliably.

Since they have not given up their hope of having their own sailing boat, they advertise in the local newspaper, which is unsuccessful at first. After several arguments between Frank and Irene's mother, who is now his stepmother, Frank decides to move out at home. He justifies it with the fact that he doesn't want to cause a strife, in fact he feels bullied by Irene's mother. He is staying with Pepo, whose parents are happy about Frank.

Meanwhile, sixteen-year-old Ria Bobek, Wanze's cousin, is coming to Eulenberg from the village of Gräbnitz for the holidays. She quickly fits into the community of friends; only with Irene there is an initial disagreement, as she is, as it turns out unfounded, jealous of Ria. Ria invites her new friends to Gräbnitz to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the village there. Pepo drives the friends using the Kremser the father of Gräbnitz where they are by the mayor, Rias father greeted and free tickets for local attractions. Irene wins the bowling competition and wins a young pig. The friends agree to give it to their teacher Karin Trapp for her wedding to Erwin Vogler, whom she met in Rostock when she visited Frank's father.

After the friends have almost given up their hope, there is a reaction to their advertisement in the local newspaper. An old man from the vicinity of Torgenau owns a cutter which he would like to give to the young people, but he asks for storage fees of 200 marks. When Frank went to the Society for Sport and Technology to get financial support, it turned out that the cutter was formerly owned by GST. You come to an agreement with the old man. As a result, they practice sailing on the lake. Your first big excursion is a two-day sailing tour on the Elbe . As they are approaching the inner-German border, they are asked by police officers to turn back . You will ultimately spend the night at the lake in Torgenau.

The celebration of Irene's birthday marks the end of the novel series. All friends accept the invitation. Frank and his father give Irene a guitar; In terms of Irene's desire to become a teacher, it turns out to be the best gift ever. Frank promises Irene to move back to her and the rest of the family in the Brinkmann house. On the same day Frank picks up his few things from Pohls and goes home hand in hand with Irene. Just before they arrive they stop; they both wish to be together for a lifetime.
