Life

Willmann was born in Tallinn as the daughter of a captain and graduated from the commercial high school in 1934. She then trained at the theater school and was an actress and director at the Endla Theater in Pärnu from 1937 to 1944 .

In September 1944 Willmann fled to Sweden , where she briefly studied (1950-1951) at Stockholm University . In 1951, however, she went to Canada , where she studied at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and made her bachelor's degree in history and political philosophy in 1955 . Willmann made her debut in Estonia with a youth drama that she published under the pseudonym Johannes Madar. In exile, she made her debut in 1950 with a volume of poetry, which she had a collection of short stories followed in 1955.

Willmann's main work is the pentalogy A handful of ashes, a second full of earth , which bears the indicative subtitle A long story about joy, love and hope (Üks pikk jutt rõõmust, armust ja lootusest). In this novel, published between 1961 and 1968, according to the author, the “main character is the Estonian people as they remember them.” This is exemplified by the main character Maria (called Iia) Mets, who is growing up as an orphan, and the bon vivant Ervin Tiedeberg gets to know. However, their initially happy marriage soon falls apart. In parallel with personal fate, numerous social problems of the time are dealt with, so that the novel can be described as a “saga of the fate of the Estonian people, which focuses on the interwar period and the end of Estonian independence”. Because of the scope and subject matter, the novel has often been compared with Anton Hansen Tammsaares Tõde ja õigus (1926–1933) and Elu ja armastus (1934). With regard to the last-named novel, it has also been pointed out that the author takes a counter-position to Tammsaare's more traditional image of women.
