Hans-Egon Hass

Hans-Egon Hass (born April 10, 1916 in Katowice , † August 12, 1969 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer , Germanist and university professor . He published the complete works and further editions of the works of Gerhart Hauptmann .

Live and act

Hans-Egon Hass studied law at the Universities of Cologne , Munich and Geneva from 1935 to 1939 . During World War II he was wounded as a first lieutenant in the German-Soviet War . From 1940 to 1943 he was a court trainee . In 1943 he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . From 1945 to 1946 he was a court assessor in Düsseldorf. He then studied German, philosophy , psychology and Romance studies at the University of Bonn until 1950 . In 1950 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate, in 1955 he completed his habilitation. In 1959 he was appointed full professor for German language and literature at the Free University of Berlin .

In April 1960 he was commissioned by Propylaen Verlag to publish a "critically revised" complete edition of Gerhart Hauptmann's works. In preparation for this he was able to study Gerhart Hauptmann's literary estate with his son Benvenuto Hauptmann in Ronco sopra Ascona . The edition appeared in eleven volumes from 1962, the year of the 100th birthday of Gerhart Hauptmann, as the "Centenar edition". After the death of Hans-Egon Hass, Wolfgang Bungies (Volume 10) and Martin Machatzke (Volume 10, Volume 11) continued to publish the last volumes.
