Clemens Heselhaus

Clemens Heselhaus (* 18th July 1912 in Burlo ; † 2. January 2000 in Pohlheim ) was a German Germanist and literary scholar .

Live and act

Clemens Heselhaus attended schools in Recklinghausen and Münster and graduated from high school in 1932 . He then studied German, history , art history and philosophy at the universities of Munich and Münster . In the meantime, he did Reich Labor Service in 1935 . In 1938 he was a teacher in Paris .

Clemens Heselhaus belonged to the SA from 1933 and to the NSDAP from 1937 . For the NSDAP foreign organization he was a trainer in Livorno and Milan .

In 1939 he was at Münster University with a thesis on the novel The illustrious Syrian Aramena of Herzog Anton Ulrich to Dr. phil. PhD . In 1940 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on Annette von Droste-Hülshoff . From 1941 to 1942 he was lecturer for German at the University of Pisa and then until 1943 at the University of Milan . While working for an agency of the German Wehrmacht in Naumburg , he passed a teaching test at the University of Halle in 1944 and was appointed lecturer for Modern German Language and Literature in August 1944 . In October 1944 he was drafted into military service.

After the Second World War he was initially an unpaid assistant to Benno von Wiese at the University of Münster . In 1946 he became a lecturer and in 1952 an extraordinary professor . In 1961 he was appointed full professor to the chair for German language and literature at the University of Giessen . 1966/1967 he was rector of the University of Giessen.

Clemens Heselhaus was best known for his work on and the publication of works by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff. Between 1947 and 1972 he edited volumes I to V of the Droste Society's yearbook for the Annette von Droste Society . He also published works by Gottfried Keller and Christian Morgenstern .
