Wolf of Aichelburg

Wolf von Aichelburg (born January 3, 1912 in Pula , Istria , † August 24, 1994 off Mallorca ) was a Transylvanian- German poet, painter and composer.

Life

Aichelburg was born on January 3, 1912 in what is now the Croatian town of Pula (then Austria-Hungary ). He comes from an Austrian noble family. In 1918 the family settled in Hermannstadt ( Sibiu ) in Transylvania. From 1928 to 1934 he studied German and Romance languages in Klausenburg and Dijon . After many years in Western Europe, he returned to his Transylvanian homeland in 1939. At the Kronstadt writer trial in 1959, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison. He was only released in 1964 due to a general amnesty for political prisoners and was able to publish in German again in the following years. In 1980 Aichelburg left Romania and moved to Freiburg im Breisgau. On August 24, 1994 he drowned off the coast of Mallorca.

His estate is kept in the archive of the Institute for German Culture and History at the LMU Munich .
