reception

Herbstritt's dissertation on German citizens in the service of GDR espionage was largely received positively both in the specialist public and in the daily and weekly press. The German historian Gerhard Wettig attests to the study that he “analyzed the internal working methods of East German foreign espionage precisely, comprehensively and in depth” and recommended it “not only to experts, but also to interested laypeople without reservation”. Armin Wagner describes the book as a "milestone in German-German intelligence research" and Clemens Heitmann called the work an "extremely material-rich [.], Meticulously researched [.] And excitingly written [.] Study". Detlef Kühn recognized Herbstritt's work in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a meritorious study, Cornelius Wüllenkemper found in the Süddeutsche Zeitung that Herbstritt had written an illuminating and interesting work and praised the author's sober and objective style. Toralf Staud described the work at the time as a kind of “collective biography of the Western IMs of the seventies and eighties, which is deepened by some exciting case studies”. Only the historian Hubertus Knabe criticized that it was incomprehensible why Herbstritt on the one hand made intensive efforts to prove that the GDR espionage was less successful than expected, but on the other hand he often proved the opposite. In the case of industrial espionage, Herbstritt partially illustrates the consequences, but underestimates them, since he excludes the economic damage that this caused the spied companies. Herbstritt also disregards the question of how the GDR economy would have been if it hadn't been for systematic technology theft in the West. On the other hand, Knabe Herbstritt's "Excursions to the SIRA registry" is "interesting" and considers "the rather casual representation of the rosewood material" to be "worth reading".
