Career

After graduating from high school in 1953, Wettig studied history, politics and Slavic studies in Tübingen, Freiburg, Leeds / England and Göttingen between 1953 and 1959. In 1961 he received his doctorate from the Georg-August University in Göttingen . From 1961 to 1962 he was research assistant for the Evangelical Study Community. From 1962 to 1966 he was a research assistant at the German Society for Foreign Policy . Subsequently, from 1966 to 1969, he was initially a scientific consultant, since 1989 head of the research area for foreign and security policy at the Federal Institute for Eastern and International Studies in Cologne. From 1990 to 1999 he was the publisher and editor-in-chief of the magazine " Außenpolitik ".

He has presented numerous publications on foreign and security policy processes and problems during the Cold War . He is considered an expert on Germany and Berlin policy in the USSR and the GDR. For Rolf Steininger he is "one of the best experts on Soviet Germany policy after 1945". In the dispute over the significance of the Stalin notes, Wettig took the opposite position to Wilfried Loth . Loth sees the Stalin notes from 1952 as a missed opportunity for reunification. Gerhard Wettig is convinced that the Soviet offers for reunification were not meant seriously. Stalin never considered abandoning the GDR in favor of a neutral, reunified Germany.
