Ferdinand Schmutzer (* 21st May 1870 in Vienna , † 26. October 1928 ) was an Austrian print graphic designer , photographer and portrait painter .

Life

Schmutzer came from a traditional Viennese family of artists. His great-grandfather Jacob Matthias Schmutzer founded the "kk Kupferstecher-Academie" in Vienna, which was soon merged with the "kk academy of united fine arts". Like his grandfather and father, Ferdinand Schmutzer dealt first with sculpture , but subsequently studied at the Vienna Academy , the painting . During a study visit to the Netherlands, Rembrandt van Rijn's influence sparked his interest in etching . Schmutzer soon enjoyed great success with his portraits of Viennese society. Prominent contemporaries such as Sigmund Freud , Albert Einstein , Emperor Franz Josef , the Vienna Philharmonic or Karl Lueger were his models.

Schmutzer exhibited his works internationally and received several prizes and awards. In 1901 he received a small gold medal at the Great Berlin Art Exhibition and a large one in 1905. A special innovation was the use of large formats, which were previously unknown in the technique of etching. In 1901 Schmutzer became a member of the Vienna Secession , in 1908 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna as a recognized master in his field . In addition to the large formats, he introduced new techniques: he used new etching processes and experimented with new types of needles. From 1922 to 1924 he was the rector of the academy. In 1928 Ferdinand Schmutzer died at the age of 58 in Vienna in his villa on Sternwartestrasse. His daughter was the artist Susanne Peschke-Schmutzer .

His honorary grave is in the Döblinger Friedhof (group 42, row 9, number 8).
