Josef Ettlinger

Josef Ettlinger (born October 22, 1869 in Karlsruhe , † February 2, 1912 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German literary historian , critic , journalist and translator .

Life

Josef Ettlinger was a son of the businessman Moritz Maier and Jeanette Arnstein. The family name was later changed. Ettlinger attended school in Karlsruhe and initially studied music at the Karlsruhe Conservatory, but in 1888 he turned to philology in Strasbourg due to a hearing impairment. He also studied in Berlin and received his doctorate in Heidelberg in 1890.

Ettlinger headed the Neue Freie Volksbühne association in Berlin , which grew from 1,800 to 50,000 members during its presidency between 1902 and 1911.

In 1898 he was the founder, publisher and (until 1911) editor of the bi-monthly publication “ Das literäre Echo ”, which was first published by Friedrich Fontane , then by Egon Fleischel , and in 1922 was transferred to the Deutsche Verlagsanstalt in Stuttgart . Before the First World War, it was one of the most important review organs for contemporary German literature.

Ettlinger was buried in Karlsruhe.
