Marten Toonder (1972)

Marten Toonder (born May 2, 1912 in Rotterdam , † July 27, 2005 in Laren ) was one of the most famous and important Dutch comic artists .

His drawings and texts have been published in newspapers and books all over the world. His most famous creation were the adventures of a witty white cat and a sedate, good-natured bear under the title Tom Poes en Heer Bommel (German: Tom Puss and Mr. Bommel ), which he drew and wrote for over 40 years. Other well-known figures by him include Koppie (German: Käpten Kopp , 1945–72) and Panda (1946–91). Toonder received many awards and prizes not only for his drawings but also for his literary skills. Many of his texts could not be adequately translated into other languages until today, because Toonder incorporated many new words into his texts, which are now completely in use in Dutch. Toonder was married to Phiny Dick, a children's book author who actively supported him in his professional endeavors.

Life

After completing military service and dropping out of art studies, Toonder began his career with the comic book Bram's Avonturen ( Brams Adventure ), which appeared only for a short time in the daily De Neederlander . In October 1933 he was hired by the Nederlandsche Rotogravure Maatschappij publishing house as a permanent illustrator, to whom he remained loyal for almost ten years. Toonder began illustrating books and designing full-color book covers in the late 1930s.

After creating some new, popular comic series in the 1930s, the demand for merchandising products such as postcards and calendars grew so great in the early 1940s that Toonder was able to run a studio in which he hired additional draftsmen. In March 1941, the cartoon Tom Puss first appeared in De Telegraaf . It was initially intended for children, but it was soon discovered that adults also enjoyed the short stories. This made the stories more complex and Tom Puss & Herr Bommel a worldwide success. In the Dutch original, Mr Bommel is called Olivier B. Bommel.

In 1944/45 Toonder stopped his work for the daily newspapers in the Netherlands, which were now controlled and monitored by the National Socialists , forged documents for the resistance and illustrated underground publications. After the war he rebuilt his studio and created various cartoon characters in the decades that followed. The often very long captions were typical of his comics, as he completely dispensed with text bubbles in his pictures.

Toonder gave up his studio in 1965 and emigrated to Ireland . There he drew and wrote almost exclusively on the stories of Tom Puss & Hr. Bobble . No fewer than 44 books appeared in which the two had numerous adventures.

In 1985 Toonder retired and in January 1986 the last episode of a nearly 45-year saga appeared. Toonder moved back to the Netherlands in the late 1990s and lived in the Rosa Spier Huis in Laren until his death in July 2005 . On the occasion of his 90th birthday in 2002, the city of Rotterdam erected a six-meter-high monument with figures from Tom Puss and Oliver Bommel .
