Around 1866 they made their way to Arizona, where they were ambushed by the Apaches . While his friend is killed, John Carter is able to hide in a mysterious cave, where he falls into a form of tetanus. When he comes to, he finds himself in a strange, bizarre landscape. He quickly realizes that he can no longer be on earth. A mystical force has transported it to Mars , which its inhabitants call Barsoom. He soon meets green Martians , huge four-armed monsters, but thanks to the planet's lower gravity, he is superior to them. John Carter realizes that the planet is a dying one. Everywhere he finds remnants of old high cultures that were not created by the current residents. The seas are partially dried up and the oxygen has to be generated artificially. Nevertheless there is a diverse life. In addition to the green, there are also red, white, black and yellow Martians who live in constant enmity with one another and fight each other. Soon afterward, John Carter meets Princess Dejah Thoris, a representative of the red people who are most similar to humans. Together with her and other new friends, he explores Mars, experiencing all sorts of fantastic and exciting adventures.

Film adaptations

In 2009, a film adaptation called Princess of Mars was released by The Asylum , a studio known for cheap copies of well-known blockbusters (" Mockbusters ") . In this case, elements from James Cameron's avatar were used to translate the story of John Carter, which was slightly based on the book.

In March 2012 Disney brought a film adaptation with the original title John Carter - Between Two Worlds in the cinemas.

Trivia

  • The fifth volume describes the chess variant Jetan , which is played on Mars. The game can be reconstructed from the description in the book and turns out to be a well playable chess variant.
  • Elements from John Carter of Mars can also be found in other well-known science fiction stories. A selection is listed below:
    • The film Avatar - Departure for Pandora was inspired by many elements from the John Carter universe, such as the animal world, but also some rough features of the plot. For example, Jake Sully is given a second body as an avatar. As James Cameron said in 2009: "With Avatar, I wanted to make a classic adventure film, like Edgar Rice Burroughs' 'John Carter of Mars'"
    • In Tad Williams ' Otherland cycle, the main character Paul Jonas travels through various “worlds” within a gigantic VR network, including a version of Mars clearly based on Burroughs in the second volume.
    • The Star Wars saga , created by George Lucas and inspired by Flash Gordon, contains many elements from John Carter. So are the titles like Jed (= king), Jeddak (= emperor) and Jeddara (= empress) or the visuals from Burroughs books. Also having to fight against monstrous beings chained, which is told in Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones , the film owes to John Carter.

Imitations

A literary appreciation of the John Carter stories created Michael Moorcock , who wrote a very similar series with his Michael Kane trilogy, which he himself regards as an appreciation for Burroughs.

John Carter and Mars, as Burroughs describes him, also play a role at the beginning of the second volume of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill .
