Milovan Đ. Glišić ( Serbian - Cyrillic Милован Ђ. Глишић ; born January 6, 1847 in Gradac (near Valjevo ); † February 1, 1908 in Dubrovnik ) was a Serbian writer , translator and journalist .

Biography and literary work

As a child of poor farmers, Milovan Glišić was forced to help his family with their work before he was able to get an education in Belgrade . He later studied technology and philosophy there . He then worked as a journalist, librarian and translator. He was editor of the magazine Srpske novine and dramaturge at the National Theater in Belgrade . Because of his liberal views, he was initially criticized by the establishment before his literary quality was increasingly recognized. Nevertheless, he never forgot his rural origins, which he incorporated into his works. He wrote two plays : Dva cvancika ("Two Twenties") and Podvala ("The Prank"). He also wrote realistic short stories that were based on Russian models. For this reason he is also known as the “Serbian Gogol ” and is considered to be the founder of the tradition of realistic tales of Serbian village life. In it he idealizes the moral behavior and cohesion of the village community on the one hand, and criticizes the authorities who oppress the farmers and prevent their social emancipation on the other . He has enriched his realistic narrative style with folklore , idealism , satire and humor , which characterize his style. As a translator of French , German and above all Russian literature, he has had a considerable influence on Serbian writers. His story Posle devedeset godina ("After ninety years"), which picks up on the legend of the vampire Sava Savanović , was filmed in 1973 by director Đorđe Kadijević for Yugoslav television under the title Leptirica ("The female butterfly").
