Jonas Laurits Idemil Lie (born November 6, 1833 on Hoen Gård , Eiker , † July 5, 1908 in Stavern ) was a Norwegian writer and playwright .

Life

Lie was born on November 6, 1833, the son of a civil servant in Hokksund. He grew up in Tromsø from the age of six and studied law in Kristiania from 1851 to 1858 . There he met Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson . After successfully completing his studies, Lie practiced as a lawyer in Kongsvinger between 1859 and 1869 .

In 1866 his Digte collection appeared , which made him popular. Then he gave up his job and worked as a journalist . In 1870 the novella Den Fremsynte appeared , which made him financially independent. In 1871 he made a trip to the Arctic Circle region. There he wrote a collection of folk tales , Fortællinger og Skildringer fra Norge . The novel Tremasteren Fremtiden 1872 made him internationally known. From 1871 Lie lived and traveled through Italy until 1874 , financed by the Norwegian government. During this trip his story Fanfulla appeared in 1873 . After his return in 1874 he received an honorary salary from Storting in Norway . Still influenced by a trip to Italy, in 1875 he wrote the story Antonio Banniera and the poem Faustina Strozzi . From the end of the 1870s, Lie lived first in northern Germany and later in Bavaria . He spent most of the winter in Paris and the summer in Berchtesgaden . After returning to Norway briefly in 1882, he finally settled in Holskogen near Kristiansand in 1893 .

Lie first found recognition through his lively descriptions of nature and people from Northern Norway. He was encouraged and encouraged to write by his friend Bjørnson. Later works, which are characterized by a pronounced impressionistic narrative technique and mystical tendencies, make social conflicts demonic. The influence of neo-romanticism can also be felt in his fairy tales . With Bjørnson, Alexander Kielland and Ibsen, he is one of the Big Four of 19th century Norwegian literature.

Lie was accepted into the Royal Society of Science and Literature in Gothenburg in 1890 . In 1904 Oskar II (Sweden) awarded him the Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Olav . According to Thomas Mann and Herman Bang , Lie had a great influence on their work.
