Neil R. Jones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Neil Ronald Jones (born May 29, 1909 in Fulton , New York , † February 15, 1988 there ) was an American science fiction writer .

Life

Jones was the son of Clarence E. and Etta Jones, nee Davis. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the US Army . In 1945 he married Gwendoline Rees (died 1964). After the war, he worked for New York State Unemployment Insurance until he retired in 1973.

His first short story was The Death's Head Meteor , which appeared in Pulp magazine Air Wonder Stories in 1930, where the word " astronaut " was used for the first time in an SF story . The following year, The Jameson Satellite , the first of the Professor Jameson stories, was one of the longest series in SF history, as the publication stretched over a period of over 35 years.

Jones wrote almost exclusively space opera stories, most of which were published in Amazing Stories . He divided his stories into three groups, namely Tales of the 24th century , Tales of the 26th century and Professor Jameson , using a kind of consistent history of the future as a basis, similar to Heinlein later with his future history stories.

With the decline of pulp magazines, Jones ended his writing career. He didn't write anything after 1951. He died in 1988 at the age of 78 and was buried in Mount Adnah Cemetery , Fulton, Oswego County.
