Karl Tanera (born June 9, 1849 in Landshut , Lower Bavaria , † October 4, 1904 in Lindau ) was an officer in the Bavarian army and a well-known writer .

Life

Karl Tanera grew up in Regensburg and Speyer , where he also attended high school. In 1866 he joined the royal Bavarian army. He attended the war school in Munich and the war academy in Berlin and was later assigned to the war history department of the Great General Staff . Tanera took part in the Franco-German War in 1870/71 and was wounded as a lieutenant in Paris in 1870 .

In 1887 he published his first book "Ernste und cheery memories of an Ordonnanzoffiziers" (2 volumes), in which he described his own experiences from the campaign against France in 1870/71. Because of the fresh and lively narrative style, the work became so successful that Tanera ended his officer career with the rank of captain to devote himself only to writing.

He lived alternately in Tutzing and Berlin and made many trips to Europe, North Africa, India , Japan , China , America and the Orient .

Karl Tanera died on October 4, 1904 at the age of 55 in Lindau.

Friends and admirers erected a memorial to him in Bernried on Lake Starnberg in 1908.

  • Germany's wars from Fehrbellin to Königgrätz . (9 vols. Munich 1891-1894)

Inspired by his many stays in distant countries, he also wrote travel books and military and historical stories for young people. He also published a number of novels , short stories , writings for young people, essays and sketches in addition to some military science writings .
