action

Ulysses ("Ulee") Jackson, who fought as a soldier in the Vietnam War, lives in Florida and, like his father, raises bees . He has been widowed for six years. Ulysses raises Casey and Penny, the daughters of his son Jimmy, who was arrested for an armed robbery, and his missing drug addict wife, Helen. The girls befriend their neighbor Connie Hope, a nurse who has been divorced twice.

One day Ulysses is called by Jimmy, who tells that Helen is being held captive by his two former accomplices in Orlando . He manages to bring her home, but the granddaughters then have to watch the detox and withdrawal symptoms up close. Connie is at your side with words and deeds these days. The strenuous manual labor in the beehives helps the patient to clear her head.

The men demand a share of the booty from a crime. Ulysses prevails against the criminals and is injured in the process. The two men are arrested and the money confiscated by the police. The local sheriff - friends with Ulee - does not investigate further into the background. The event welded the family back together. Jimmy would like to continue working in the family business after his release from prison. Ulysses - who was initially very opposed to Connie's help - invites her to his home for dinner.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the portrayal of Peter Fonda was reminiscent of his father Henry Fonda . His “subtle” and “nuanced” play shows the pain and uncertainty of the main character behind the “carefully constructed facade”. The criminal aspects of the plot would hardly exceed the level of the stereotypes. However, the film also offers more complex elements such as Ulysses' relationship with his grandchildren.

Janet Maslin wrote in the New York Times on June 13, 1997 that the "quietly striking" portrayal of Peter Fonda was the "big surprise" of the 1997 Sundance Film Festival . It is the "finest work" of his career. The film is also the director's best work; he is "beautiful" and "deeply felt", an "oasis of humanity".
