Walther G. Oschilewski
Walther Georg Oschilewski (born July 22, 1904 in Berlin ; † May 1, 1987 there ) was a social democratic journalist , poet and cultural historian . Oschilewski also published under the pseudonyms Walther Gosch and Peter Hartberg .
Life
Oschilewski was born as a working class child and grew up with his five siblings in poor circumstances.
In 1920 Oschilewski began an apprenticeship as a typesetter with the social democratic “ Vorwärts ”. He later studied in Jena and Berlin , among other things as a student of Theodor Heuss , political theory and political history . In the years 1921 to 1923 there was a "close" collaboration between Oschilewski and the anarchist Ernst Friedrich, and he reported in 1978 that this collaboration had a "decisive influence" on his "own development".
Oschilewski belonged to the group of writers that formed around Victor Otto Stomps and his publishing house Rabenpresse , founded in 1926 . This also included Horst Lange and his wife Oda Schaefer , Peter Huchel , Werner Bergengruen , for a short time Bertolt Brecht , Joachim Maass , Robert Seitz , Jens Heimreich , Rolf Bongs , Werner Helwig , Eberhard Meckel and Hans Gebser, who was a philosopher in Switzerland Jean Gebser became known.
Oschilewski was editor of the literary magazine “ Der Fischzug ” founded by Stomps in 1926 , which was discontinued after a few issues in the same year. He later made contributions to the literary magazine " The White Raven ", which was founded by Stomps in 1932 and was published until 1934. In the Rabenpresse von Oschilewski published, among other things, “Song of the Stars” with a woodcut by Frans Masereel .
In 1940 Oschilewski became a soldier. After the war he became a scientific librarian at the German Teachers' Library.
Following an offer from Arno Scholz (1904–1971), he became chief editor, later deputy editor-in-chief of the West Berlin daily Telegraf , until he left in 1969. In addition, he designed two feature pages a week for the "Berlin Voice" without a fee also wrote many articles, especially about the party history of the SPD and the history of Berlin.
Oschilewski was a member of the city council of Greater Berlin from 1947 to 1950 .
Among other things, Oschilewski published a series of portraits of artists and politicians as well as the books "350 Years of Berlin Newspapers" and "Great Socialists in Berlin". In the yearbook “Der Bär von Berlin” from the Association for the History of Berlin, he published a total of nine essays on the labor movement and the press in Berlin.
