Kuwabara Takeo
Kuwabara Takeo ( Japanese 桑 原 武夫 ; born May 10, 1904 in Tsuruga in Fukui Prefecture ; † April 10, 1988 ) was a Japanese literary scholar and translator.
The son of the sinologist Kuwabara Jitsuzōs studied French literature and culture at the University of Kyoto until 1926 . He was from 1943 to 1948 professor at Tohoku University , then at Kyoto University. He translated works by Stendhal and Alain , among others , as well as literary writings into Japanese. For his font Rousseau kenkyū (" Rousseau research") he received the Mainichi Culture Prize in 1951 , and in 1974 he was awarded the Asahi Prize . In 1979 he was honored as a person with special cultural merits ( Bunka Kōrōsha ) and was awarded the Cultural Order in 1987 .
In his honor, the " Kuwabara Takeo Art and Science Prize " ( 桑 原 武夫 学 芸 賞 ) was established in 1998 .
