The Tohoku University ( Japanese 東北大学 , Tohoku Daigaku , abbreviated as 東北大 , Tohoku dai ) is located in Sendai , in the prefecture of Miyagi is one of the most prestigious public universities in Japan . There are 10 faculties and over 16,000 students (as of 2015).

In 1907, the Tōhoku Imperial University ( 東北 帝国 大学 , Tōhoku Teikoku Daigaku ) was founded as one of the Nine Imperial Universities . At the time of its founding there were the fields of agriculture, science and medicine . In 1918, the area of agriculture was made independent to the University of Hokkaidō and in 1919 and 1922 the areas of literature , law and engineering were added. In the following years the areas of education (1949), dentistry (1965) and pharmaceuticals (1972) were added.

In the technical laboratories of the university (beginning in 1924) Professor Yagi Hidetsugu and his assistant Uda Shintarō developed the first direction-sensitive antenna ( Yagi-Uda antenna ). This innovation had far-reaching effects on the amateur radio , the radar technology and on the radio - and television - broadcasting .

From 1936 to 1941 the Jewish philosopher Karl Löwith, who had fled from Germany, taught at the Imperial University until he was expelled from here and went to the USA in 1941.

Among the graduates of the university is Kōichi Tanaka , who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2002 .

The great Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 and the subsequent tsunami , from which Sendai was badly affected, had an impact on teaching at the university, so that the beginning of the summer semester had to be postponed to May 6, 2011.
