Karaki Junzō ( Japanese 唐 木 順 三 ; * February 13, 1904 , † May 27, 1980 ) was a Japanese literary scholar.

Karaki was born in Miyada (Nagano) . He studied philosophy at Kyōto University and was a student of Nishida Kitarō . He wrote u. a. an “Introduction to Contemporary Japanese Literature” ( Gendai Nihon bungaku josetsu , 1932) and a book on medieval Japanese literature ( Chūsei no bungaku , 1955). The year he died, he published a memorandum on the social responsibility of scientists ( Kagakusha no shakaiteki-sekinin ni tsuite no oboegaki ). In 1955 he received the Yomiuri Literature Prize for Chūsei no bungaku and in 1975 was one of the candidates for the Grand Prize for Japanese Literature, which was not awarded that year .

He taught at Meiji University from 1949 .

Karaki wrote of the relationship between language and meditation:

"The character dō (way) of the words dōtoku [perfect expression] and dōjaku [in Dōgen 's Shōbōgenzō ] is used with the meaning of" to say. "It is as though there were a passion to speak in words of that which transcends words. This is my feeling. Yet if one were to fall back into the Zen saying, "not relying on words or letters," and let it all go, then one could have an end of it. I feel that the special character of Dōgen's Zen lies in these words, dōtoku and dōjaku. It seems to me that if "doing only zazen" were the point, then without writing ninety-five fascicles, "Do zazen " would be have been enough. In spite of this there is a determination to explain completely and logically why it is necessary to do zazen. Isn't Shōbōgenzō a book of great singularity? "
