Japanese Literature Grand Prize

The Grand Prize for Japanese Literature ( Japanese 日本 文学 大 賞 , Nihon Bungaku Taishō ) was a literary prize for Japanese literature that was awarded annually from 1969 to 1988 by the Society of Shinchō Publishing House for the Promotion of Literature . It is one of the three great literary prizes of the Shinchō publishing house ( 三大 新潮 賞 , Midai Shinchōshō).

Award criteria and procedure

  • The prize is awarded for novels, literary reviews , poetry ( 詩歌 ) and plays ( 戯曲 ).
  • The selection committee consists of 4 people who change every year.
  • Selection criteria:
    • 1969–1972: The award was given to independent publications that appeared between January and December the previous year.
    • 1973: The award went to independent publications that were published between January of the previous year and April in the year of the award, i.e. H. between January 1972 and April 1973.
    • from 1974 on: the award was given to independent publications that were published between May of the previous year and April in the year of the award.
    • Works by people who belong to the selection committee are excluded from the award in the year in which they belong to the selection committee.
  • The winners will receive 1 million yen in prize money.
  • The award-winning work is announced in the literary magazine Shinchō .
  • In 1984 the following new regulations were adopted:
    • Since 1984 the prize has been awarded separately for scientific (i.e. non-fiction ) and literary works.
    • There is a five-person selection committee for both areas.
    • The works of the members of the selection committee were accepted for the award.
  • 1988 The three great literary prizes of the Shinchō-Verlag were converted into the four prizes of the Shinchō-Verlag ( 新潮 四 賞 ) and the awarding of the great literary prize for Japanese literature was formally discontinued.
    • The award for literature was divided into the Mishima Prize for so-called pure literature and the Yamamoto Shūgorō Prize ( 山 本 周五郎 賞 ) for entertainment literature.
    • The award for scientific publications was converted into the Shinchō Prize for Science ( 新潮 学 芸 賞 , Shinchō Gakuenshō). It is currently being continued as the Kobayashi Hideo Prize and the Shinchō Documentation Prize ( 新潮 ド キ ュ メ ン ト 賞 , Shinchō Dokyumento-shō).
    • The last selection committee for the non-fiction book in 1987 continued its work as a selection committee for the Shinchō Prize for Science .
