Ernst Alexander Zwilling (born September 25, 1904 in Osijek , Austria-Hungary , today: Croatia ; † October 24, 1990 in Baden , Lower Austria ) was an Austrian African explorer and travel writer.

Life

Until he was four years old, Zwilling lived in the Slavonian town of Osijek, where his mother was at home, who came from a wealthy German-speaking merchant family. His father was Viennese by birth and served as a lieutenant colonel in the southeast of the Danube Monarchy. When the father was ordered back to Vienna in 1908, the family first lived in one of the officers' pavilions in the Albrecht barracks in the Prater, and later in an apartment building on the Elisabeth promenade . The little boy preferred to stay with his grandparents in the villa in Hietzing, where his grandfather had him stuff the cartridge cases before he went hunting, and his grandmother read out adventure stories and exotic travel descriptions.

Ernst Zwilling was in Cameroon as early as the 1930s . After the Anschluss in 1938, Zwilling believed in the recovery of the former colonies to the German Reich. In the course of the denazification after the Second World War , however, his attitude played no role. In 1953 he gave the first gorilla to the Schönbrunn Zoo . He made a name for himself as a big game hunter of live animals and was also known in Austria.

In the following period, Zwilling not only wrote travel reports, but also filmed them.

He died in the hospital in Baden near Vienna and was buried in the Hietzingen cemetery .
