Sidney Paget
Sidney Edward Paget ( October 4, 1860 in London , † January 28, 1908 ) was a British illustrator .
) (bornPaget was the middle of three brothers ( Henry , Sidney and Walter ). He began drawing at a young age and studied at the British Museum in London for two years before attending Heatherley's School of Art and then the Royal Academy Schools .
During the Victorian Age , his work appeared in The Strand magazine . Paget became known worldwide for his illustrations of the Sherlock Holmes stories. It is said that he used the facial features of his brother Walter as a model for his illustrations of the master detective, which Sidney's older brother, Henry Marriott Paget, however, denied. The checkered peaked cap (eng .: Deerstalker ), with which Holmes can be seen in many pictures, goes back to Paget's own predilection for this cap and is explicitly only mentioned in one story by Doyle: in The Adventure of Silver Blaze (Eng .: Silver star ) as "an ear flapped traveling cap".
Sidney Paget made a total of 356 drawings for 37 short stories and the novel The Dog of Baskerville .
Sidney Paget was initially commissioned by the editors of The Strand as an illustrator for the stories of Sherlock Homes due to a mix-up of the brothers. The editors wanted to offer the contract to younger brother Walter Paget, who was already known for his military camp illustrations in the Illustrated London News . However, since they did not know the first name Walters, the letter was delivered with the offer Sidney. Walter later illustrated novels such as King Solomon's Treasury (1895) by Henry Rider Haggard and Treasure Island (1899) by Robert Louis Stevenson . After the death of the older brother, Walter Paget illustrated the Sherlock Holmes story The Dying Detective (Eng .: "The detective on the death bed").
