The deerstalker (of English deer stalking , " stalking on deer ") is a in the UK popularized hunting cap with eye and neck guard and ear flaps. The neck protection is used to protect the wearer's collar from rain and dripping water from trees, the earmuffs sewn on the sides are usually tied over the crown and can be folded down and tied under the chin. The hat is usually made of checked fabric.

Sherlock Holmes is often depicted with the Deerstalker and the Inverness coat , although hunting hats were typically out of town and this hat is only mentioned in a single story.
