Josephus Carel Franciscus (Jef) Last (born May 2, 1898 in The Hague , † February 15, 1972 in Laren , Province of Noord-Holland ) was a Dutch poet and writer .
Jef Last came from a Catholic family; he joined the Sociaal-Democratische Arbeiderspartij early on, then switched to the Revolutionair-Socialist Arbeiderspartij . With his revolutionary friend André Gide he toured the Soviet Union in 1936 ; but they returned relatively disaffected. Last wrote the work Mijn vriend André Gide about his friendship with Gide .
When the Spanish Civil War broke out in the summer of 1936, Jef Last, together with his friend Harry Domela , immediately rushed to the aid of the Spanish Republic . As a member of the International Brigades , he took part in the civil war, thereby losing his Dutch citizenship (which he later regained).
From 1950 to 1953 he lived in Indonesia , where he worked as a middle school teacher and was friends with Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta .
In 1966 Last was awarded the Joost van den Vondel Prize .
