Rodoviária Nacional

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Rodoviária Nacional was a state bus company in Portugal .

In the course of the new economic policy after the Carnation Revolution of 1974, key industries and companies were nationalized, also in the field of passenger transport. According to a law passed in 1975, all bus operators with a fleet of more than 60 buses were combined to form the Rodoviária Nacional (RN, German for "National Transport Company") and dissolved in the RN, which was uniformly managed from June 1, 1976.

The RN operated a nationwide network of bus routes, both in local transport and in intercity bus operation ( Intercidades ), with 9 (later 10) regional passenger centers (CEP - Centros de Exploração de Passageiros ). A freight division was also operated, RNTrans, in addition to other, smaller logistics activities.

The buses of the RN had a uniform appearance, with an orange painted lower part of the bus and a white upper part with the company logo on it. Leyland licensed buses manufactured in Portugal were used, as well as Volvo and AEC buses, etc. a. The fleet of the largest CEP ( Lisbon with Cascais and Sintra ) consisted of 1,300 Volvo, 1,240 Leyland and 850 AEC buses.

In preparation for the privatization of the RN, which had meanwhile been decided by the government, the formerly state-owned RN was converted into a stock corporation ( SA) in January 1990 , after bonds had already been issued to private companies in 1985 in a major campaign. The regional CEP became independent companies operating under the umbrella of a newly created holding company, RNIP ( Rodoviária Nacional, Investimentos e Participações, SA ) as a direct successor to RN. Their capital remained entirely in state ownership.

In 1991, the newly created companies that had emerged from the former CEPs began to be sold to private customers. In 1995, through the merger of various CEP successor companies, the new operator Rede Expressos was created . Today it operates the largest national bus route network and can be considered the successor to the RN. The Barraqueiro group secured another considerable part of the former RN business .
