Ilo Mitkë Qafëzezi

Ilo Mitkë Qafëzezi (born November 5, 1889 in Korça , died April 16, 1964 ) was a Wallachian writer, historian, school director and Koran translator from Albania . He first translated the Koran into Albanian in 1921 . He followed French and English templates. It was not until 1929 that Ibrahim Dallius' translation from the original Arabic text appeared.

Life

Qafëzezi was born in the Ottoman Empire and immigrated to the Kingdom of Romania at the age of 13 . He later emigrated to the United States . In 1924 he returned to Korça in what was then the Principality of Albania , where he worked as a teacher and later as school director for the town's Romanian school, which was mainly attended by the Aromanian minority. Until the Second World War he was considered the best known and leading biographer in what was then the Kingdom of Albania .

As an autodidact , Qafëzezi was very energetic and wrote numerous publications in various literary and historical journals. He developed a systematic collection of historical documents, writings and people from the 18th century. He also published important historical works about the place Voskopoja , the center of the Aromanian minority in Albania at that time . He also wrote books about the cities of Berat and Vithkuq . He discovered the manuscripts of Theodor Kavalliotises and a copy of the first edition of the Εισαγωγική Διδασκαλία (introductory briefing) by Daniel Moscopolites , which had been published in Venice in 1794 . He later discovered the manuscripts of Constantine von Berat and the dictionary by Naum Veqilharxhi from 1844. Qafëzezi translated the Alipaschiad , a poem about Ali Pasha by Janina , which was originally written in modern Greek by the Albanian Haxhi Shehreti .
