Julius Franz Schütz grew up in the Styrian market town of Mureck, which at the time had 1,500 inhabitants and was located on the German-Slovenian language border . Here he first attended elementary school and then continued his education at the Episcopal Gymnasium in Graz . He discovered his talent for writing and his deep inclination for poetry early on . Nevertheless, after passing the school leaving examination at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz, he began to study law . During his studies, however, he also dealt intensively with German studies , history and art history . In 1914 Schütz was promoted to Dr. jur. PhD .

During his studies, Schütz had friendly relationships with Ernst Goll , who came from Windischgrätz (now Slovenj Gradec in Slovenia ) . This sensitive individualist was not only a confidante for him, but also a driving force for his own literary work. Immediately after the tragic suicide of his companion in July 1912, he published his literary estate as a volume of poetry under the title: "In the bitter human land". With this he set a permanent memorial to his friend and saved his work from being forgotten.

After the war years, Schütz joined the Styrian State Library at the Joanneum in Graz in 1919 . He spent a considerable part of his working life in this important Styrian cultural institution, in this regard as director from 1937 until his retirement in 1954. A larger than life bust in the library's reading room is a reminder of his work.

After the death of his wife Grete in 1949, he suffered from increasing loneliness, also because the marriage remained childless, and noticeably withdrew from the public. Later he bequeathed his home community, to which he felt closely connected throughout his life, his house on Mureck Hauptplatz with its furniture and its extensive library, on condition that the building be used for cultural purposes and that it be turned into a museum.

Julius Franz Schütz died shortly before his 72nd birthday in Graz and rests in the cemetery of his birthplace.
