Paolo Ferrari (born April 5, 1822 in Modena , † March 9, 1889 in Milan ) was an Italian comedy poet .

Life

Paolo Ferrari.

Ferrari studied law in Modena, but above all history and literature. His father worked as the ducal governor in Massa. Here Ferrari wrote his first comedy in 1847: "Bartolomeo calzolaro", which he later called "Il codicillo dello zio Venanzio". Other pieces followed, for example “La donna e lo scettico” and “Il codicillo”.

In 1852 he wrote his masterpiece: "Goldoni e le sue sedici commedie nuove", which was initially not performed for two years, but then achieved a rare triumph with both audiences and critics. The comedy “Parini e la satira” in 1857 was just as successful. Both works have long been considered the best products in the field of modern Italian comedy.

More dramas and comedies followed. Savory fabrics, serious tendencies, pointed dialogue, skilful craftsmanship and in some cases also garish effects are reminiscent of French patterns here and there in Ferrari's newer pieces. In 1860 Ferrari took over a professorship in history in Modena, and later another at the Scientific Academy in Milan.
