Maria Dąbrowska [ dɔmˈbrɔfska ], b. Szumska (born October 6, 1889 in Russów near Kalisz , † May 19, 1965 in Warsaw ), was a Polish writer.

Maria Dąbrowska came from the impoverished Polish landed gentry and was married to the political activist Marian Dąbrowski . At the same time interested in literature and politics, she campaigned for people who were negatively affected by the circumstances of the time and the poverty in the countryside.

She studied natural sciences , sociology and philosophy in Lausanne and Brussels and lived in Warsaw since 1917 . For a time she worked in the Polish Ministry of Agriculture, but also went public with scientifically accurate newspaper reports. She was also artistically gifted and painted landscapes and still lifes.

From 1927 she repeatedly turned against human rights violations in Poland. During the German occupation of Poland , she stayed in Warsaw and supported the cultural life of the Polish underground .

In her novels, plays and newspaper articles she analyzed the psychological consequences of world events for ordinary people. In nights and days she describes the decline of the landed gentry into the middle classes.
