Unua Libro (literally: First Book ) is the name given to the first publication on and partly in Esperanto . The brochure itself is entitled “International Language. Preface and complete textbook. ”The language inventor, Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof , published it under the pseudonym“ Dr. Esperanto". The name Esperanto was later transferred to the language itself. The first edition appeared in Warsaw on July 26, 1887 in Russian . Translations into Polish , German and French as well as a corrected Russian-language edition followed in the same year .

The brochure contains sample texts in Esperanto, the Our Father , the beginning of Genesis , a sample letter, two poems by Zamenhof and excerpts from poems by Heinrich Heine . It also contains the so-called “ 16 rules ”, a grammatical sketch of Esperanto, and a list of words with a little over 900 Esperanto word stems .
