Fernán Silva Valdés

Fernán Silva Valdés (born October 15, 1887 in Montevideo , † January 9, 1975 ibid) was a Uruguayan writer.

Some of the poems by Silva Valdés were published in the journal Apolo . In 1913 he made his debut with the volume of poetry Ánfora de barro , which was followed in 1917 by Humo de Incienso . With collections of poems such as Poemas nativos (1925), Intemperie (1930), Romances chúcaros (1933) and Romancero del sur (1939), he made a name for himself alongside Pedro Leandro Ipuche as the founder of nativismo in Uruguay. He became popular as a lyricist for the tangos Margarita Punzó and Adiós Argentina (music by Gerardo Matos Rodríguez ), the Creole waltz Nido deshecho (music by Guillermo Barbieri ), the Cifra Querencia (music by Américo Chiriff ), the Milonga En Blanco y Negro ( Music by Néstor Feria ), Agua florida (music by Ramón Collazo ) and Clavel del aire (music by Juan de Dios Filiberto ).

In addition, Silva Valdés was an important playwright. His ballet Mburucuyá , composed by Eduardo Fabini , was premiered in 1936 at the Teatro Colón . A number of his plays have been performed at the Teatro Solis in Montevideo. In 1966 a complete edition of his works was published in the series Colección Clásicos Uruguayos . In 1970 he received the Gran Premio Nacional de Literatura .
